The area is similar in size to the Columbia River flood basalt province on Earth. Each flow field is composed of numerous individual flows. Many of the flows are hundreds of kilometers long, comparatively narrow (tens of kilometers), Many scientists believe the flow fields are generally basaltic in composition [Campbell and Campbell, 1992].
